You will need:

  • 6mm needles
  • 30g worsted yarn in different colours
  • tapestry needle for sewing up

Skills:

  • Shape knitting using wrap & turn technique
  • Decrease stitches by knitting 2 stitches together (k2tog)

 

Pattern

Knit  your stocking all in one colour, or change colour and make stripes when you feel like it.  You may like to experiment with fair isle techniques.

Cast on 40 stitches

Knit 8 rows in garter stitch

Knit 16 rows in stocking stitch

 

Shape one side of the heel:

Row 1:  Knit 14, W&T

Row 2 and all even rows: purl to end

Row 3: k13, W&T

Row 5: k12, W&T

Row 7: k11, W&T

Row 9: k10, W&T

Continue shaping in this way, decreasing the number of stitches by 1 before doing a Wrap and Turn with each knit row, until you have completed a row where you knitted 5 stitches before the Wrap and Turn.

Next row (row 20): purl

Row 21: knit the the whole row, picking up the wraps and knitting them with the corresponding stitch as you come to them.

 

Shape the other side of the heel:

Row 1:  Purl 14, W&T

Row 2 and all even rows: knit to end

Row 3: p13, W&T

Row 5: p12, W&T

Row 7: p11, W&T

Row 9: p10, W&T

Continue shaping in this way, decreasing the number of stitches by 1 before doing a Wrap and Turn with each purl row, until you have completed a row where you worked 5 stitches before the wrap and turn.

Next row (row 20): purl the the whole row, picking up the wraps and purling them with the corresponding stitch as you come to them.

Work 24 rows in stocking stitch, ending with a purl row

 

Shape toe:

Row 1: *k2, k2tog, repeat from * to end (30 stitches)

Row 2: purl

Row 3: *k1, k2tog, repeat from * to end (20 stitches)

Row 4: purl

Row 5: *k2tog, repeat from * to end (10 stitches)

Cut yarn and pass end through remaining stitches.  Pull up tight and secure with sewing.  Sew up seam.
