Meet Marie! She lives in a very beautiful rural part of North Kilkenny in Ireland and attends knitting and crochet classes with Máire Hanley
We thought it would be interesting to say hello to Marie and find out a wee bit about her. Here she is on the right with Máire on the left and her friend Judy in the middle.
Hi Marie! Who taught you to knit?
I started knitting with my Mam who was a very talented seamstress, she also knitted jumpers and cardigans for us as children and the only thanks she got were complaints that the wool was scratchy. It is in hindsight that I appreciate her talents. She made wedding dresses for myself and my two sisters.
What about crochet?
I learned to crochet with Maire
. I get wonderful satisfaction from making something, it is absorbing it is ‘time out’ for me. Mastering a new pattern and learning to follow patterns or a new stitch is very worthwhile.
What do you like about the classes you attend in Kilkenny?
is an inspirational teacher and continues to find challenges for me. The classes are great ‘craic’ where all manner of topics are discussed. The ladies have turned me into a ‘wool snob’, Previously I would rarely distinguish between acrylic and natural fibres but now I can appreciate alpaca, merino, bamboo and organic wool. Maire gave me a loan of a pattern book called Really wild tea cosies.. so far I have completed three of them. Working with two circular needles they are three dimensional and fun. They make unusual presents. One has gone to San Francisco and another to Amsterdam. One of the most challenging projects tackled so far is a Mochilla Bag it was great working with the lovely vibrant colours.
